What is a NUANS Report?

A NUANS Search / Report is a system owned and operated by Service Canada which Is used to determine the availability of a corporate/business name. In order for you to register or incorporate your business, a NUANS Report is required by the Federal & most provincial governments.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

CONSIDERATION #1

The search compares your proposed business name to all other existing business names and trademarks in your industry and region.

CONSIDERATION #4

The Federal and Provincial Registrars have the final say on accepting business names, regardless of the information presented in the NUANS report.

CONSIDERATION #2

A NUANS report will list organizations that have a business name similar to the one you proposed.

CONSIDERATION #3

A NUANS report reserves your business name for 90 days.

Why Do I Need a NUANS Report?

First and importantly, Provincial Legislation in most provinces requires business owners to provide a NUANS report when registering a new business name.

Secondly, a NUANS report provides peace of mind that your business name is unique and doesn’t conflict with any other business names or trademarks in your industry and region. This is the peace of mind a business owner needs to confidently forge ahead with efforts and expenses in branding, logo creation, design / advertising services, on-line advertising and more. Having the right to use your business name is required to safely move forward in all these activities.

What’s in a Name?

Choosing your business name may come very naturally or it may be a more challenging process. There are two key factors involved. First, a business name must have a distinctive element (a core unique name that is creative and meaningful to the business). Secondly, a business name should have some sort of descriptive element (a phrase or tagline that says what the business does). An example would be “ACME Home Cleaning”. ACME is the distinctive business name and “Home Cleaning” is a descriptive phrase, letting customers know what the company does.
